Streamlining PAEA Leadership Selection: Your Voice, Our Future

As a PA educator, you know how crucial strong leadership is to our profession’s future. That’s why the Board of Directors has proposed two key improvements to streamline how we select PAEA’s leaders.

On June 23-24, member programs will have the chance to vote on bylaws updates designed to make our Board elections more efficient while maintaining the transparency and member-focused approach that has long been PAEA’s hallmark. As with any significant change, these updates require approval through member program votes – the foundation of PAEA’s governance structure.

What’s Changing

The bylaws amendments to Articles 3.03 (Board Elections) and 4.02 (Officer Elections) introduce two key improvements to our leadership selection process:

1. Streamlined Voting Process

  • Current: Candidates must secure a majority (50%+1) of votes
  • Proposed Update: Winners will be determined by plurality (highest number of votes received)
  • Benefits: Eliminates the need for runoff elections (and stress for candidates) while maintaining electoral integrity

2. Elections That Fit Our Needs

  • Current: All board positions are filled through a single election
  • Proposed Update: Flexibility to conduct separate elections when strategically beneficial
  • Benefits: Allows for more responsive alignment with PAEA’s evolving needs

Why it Matters

The Board proposes these changes to strengthen PAEA’s governance in three key ways:

  1. Increased Efficiency: More timely and decisive election outcomes
  2. Simplified Process: Streamline voting procedures for member programs
  3. Greater Flexibility: Election structure that adapts as our organization grows and evolves.

While streamlining operations, these changes preserve PAEA’s commitment to transparent leadership selection. Comprehensive candidate information will continue to be available in advance of all elections.

What’s Next

Each member program holds one vote in this important decision, with program directors typically serving as their program’s voting representative. Key dates include:

  • June 11: Distribution of voting instructions and designation forms to program directors
  • June 23-24: Member voting period
  • June 24: Results announced in the Networker

As PAEA continues to evolve, the Association remains committed to member-driven leadership. Program participation in this voting process helps ensure PAEA’s continued advancement, guided by the collective expertise of our members.
