A New Way to Highlight PAEA Members’ Work

In August, PAEA will kick off a new webinar series called Program Showcases. The purpose of these sessions is to spotlight the work PAEA member programs are doing collaboratively and to share ready-to-go resources, best practices, and lessons learned. The first two program showcases relate to telehealth and clinical innovation. We hope you will join us!

PAEA Telehealth Program Showcase

Date: Monday, August 3
Time: 3:30–5:00 p.m. ET

This presentation will provide an overview of the development of a telehealth curriculum for two different PA programs, including the framework for each curriculum and the competencies used for grounding the educational content. We will share the similarities and differences between the two telehealth curriculums, along with associated student and faculty feedback. Attendees will leave with an outline of recommendations and a list of resources on how to incorporate a telehealth curriculum into their own PA program. Registration is limited to 500 attendees.

Panelists:

  • Shani Fleming, MS, MPH, PA-C, associate professor at the UMB/AACC PA program, PALLA
  • Karen L. Gordes, PhD, DScPT, chief learning director at PALLA
  • Shannon Anderson, MPAS, PA-C, assistant professor at Oregon Health & Science University

The session will be recorded and available in the Digital Learning Hub (DLH).

PAEA Innovation in Clinical Practice Program Showcase

Date: Tuesday, August 18
Time: 3:00–4:30 p.m. ET

In this program showcase, faculty will share highlights from an interactive telemedicine experience that was incorporated into each phase of clinical elective course syllabi for PA students. This curriculum:

  • Maximized preceptor availability
  • Using virtual technology (meetings and learning platforms) that promoted telehealth best practices, integrated students into interprofessional teams to contribute to the care of serious illness (COVID-19) patients
  • Instructed students in effective communication skills and other competencies for telehealth/telemedicine

Students utilized a digital portfolio tool to record and develop their individual clinical performance and professional practice. Preliminary survey data were collected from all participants — including content experts, simulated patients in telemedicine scenarios, and students — and will be shared with attendees. Registration is limited to 500 attendees.

Panelists:

  • Nadya Dimitrov, DPM, PA-C, assistant director of the PA Post-Professional Masters Program at Stony Brook University
  • Gerald T. Simons, MPAS, PA-C, faculty member at the Stony Brook University PA program
