Stony Brook Uses AHRQ Tools to Train PAs

The Stony Brook PA program is featured as an impact case study on the Agency for Healthcare and Research Quality’s website. Stony Brook uses three of AHRQ’s products and data resources in its PA program.

One of the tools, TeamSTEPPS, an evidence-based patient safety system developed by AHRQ and the Department of Defense, is used by the Stony Brook Health Sciences Center in New York as part of an interdisciplinary geriatrics course for its PA students. TeamSTEPPS promotes team-based care through situation monitoring and empowering medical staff to express concerns about a patient’s care.

Clinical Associate Professor and Chair of Stony Brook’s Department of Physician Assistant Education Peter Kuemmel, MS, said, “TeamSTEPPS opened the students’ eyes to the importance of practicing team-based care and recognizing the value of good communication.”
