Six PAs Selected for Prestigious Scholarship Program

The 2018 class of Paul Ambrose Scholars was recently announced by the Association for Prevention Teaching and Research, and six PAs are part of the latest cohort. Forty students in all were selected from 32 academic health professions institutions representing medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, physical/occupational therapy, and public health disciplines.

The Paul Ambrose Scholars Program exposes health professions students to influential public health professionals and prepares them to be leaders in addressing population health challenges at both the national and community level — an experience that some scholars have called “life-changing.”

Congratulations to this year’s PA scholars:

Matthew Drause, Yale School of Medicine
Samantha Hammock, East Carolina University
Pamela Audrey Lee, Shenandoah University
Catherine Mahon, Shenandoah University
Melissa Rabinek, Shenandoah University
Jalesa Venning, East Carolina University

During the program year, scholars will learn how to:

  • Define and recognize evidence-based public health programming
  • Obtain the necessary resources to carry out a public health intervention
  • Use logic models for planning public health programs to achieve the Healthy People 2020 objectives
  • Advocate for public health issues
  • Collaborate with different disciplines and community members on a project

The new scholars will get right to work, attending the Public Health Leadership Symposium in Philadelphia on April 9–10. A summary of each scholar’s community project can be found in the 2018 Scholar Directory.
