PAEA’s Changing of the Guard

With a field of 10 candidates running for four director at large seats, it took a run-off election during the Education Forum in Denver last week to determine the final 2018 Board of Directors. After 145 program directors, or their designated proxies, had voted, three incumbent directors at large, along with a new director at large, Gerald Kayingo, were elected to next year’s Board. And Jonathan Bowser, who served as a director at large for three years, will be returning to the Board as president elect.

We welcome and congratulate the winners of this year’s election. Their new terms will begin on January 1, 2018.

Vote to Continue Conversation Around OTP

Noting that the move toward OTP (optimal team practice) was proceeding too rapidly and that AAPA has not adequately considered the concerns raised by PAEA, USC Program Director Kevin Lohenry proposed a motion for PAEA to create a special task force to further investigate the implications of OTP for PA education and new graduates. The motion was co-sponsored by Tony Brenneman, Karen Mulitalo, and Grace Landel. The task force would have representation from a variety of stakeholders, including the 4 Orgs, physicians, and other groups, to be determined by the Board of Directors.

After a brief discussion about when the findings of the task force would be presented — by next year’s business meeting at the latest — the motion passed with 97% voting in favor.

In Other Business…

Members also voted on 18 bylaws amendments and two position policies. Position policies #3 and#4 were both reaffirmed, and the Board will be creating task forces to review each set of competencies.

Some of the bylaws amendments include:

  • A new mission for the Association: PAEA’s mission is leadership, innovation, and excellence in PA education.
  • Further clarity on the practice of run-off elections for the Board in Article 4.04.
  • Various housekeeping amendments to update references to survey names, volunteer group names, and consistency throughout the bylaws.
