Laura’s Journey: Building Community Through PAEA Leadership

Just one year into PA education, Laura Gerstner, DHSc, MHA, PA-C, attended her first PAEA Education Forum. Energized by the networking opportunities and sense of community, she felt an immediate pull to become more involved. That initial connection set the course for a decade of leadership and service within PAEA.

Laura’s path to the Board of Directors began with a volunteer role on the former Committee on Clinical Education, where she collaborated with other clinical coordinators to support and strengthen clinical training. At the time, she was serving as a clinical coordinator herself – a role she held for over twelve years. In addition to developing resources through the committee, she served as facilitator for the Clinical Coordinators 101 workshop for eight years, sharpening her skills in mentorship and faculty development.

In 2020, Laura joined the Leadership Mission Advancement Commission (LMAC) and was named Chair the following year. “I felt prepared to apply for the Chair position due to my growing leadership responsibilities at my program as well as my years of service in various roles to PAEA,” she said.  She also knew the LMAC to be “collaborative and eager to contribute to the strategic direction of the Board.”

Under her leadership, the LMAC launched a successful Leadership Book Club Series, contributed to Education Forum Presentations, and oversaw the development of a forthcoming Leadership Toolkit. Throughout, Laura championed the contributions of her fellow commission members, embracing a leadership style rooted in collaboration and strategic thinking.

“Volunteering with PAEA has significantly enriched my professional growth,” Laura shared. “It’s expanded my leadership skills, deepened my passion for PA education, and allowed me to collaborate with amazing colleagues across the U.S.” Over time, her leadership style evolved from task-focused to a mentorship-driven, shaped by a commitment to empowering others and guiding teams toward a shared vision.

Her advice to others considering volunteer service? “Just do it! Volunteering for PAEA is incredibly rewarding. You’ll gain invaluable leadership skills, build lasting relationships, and making a meaningful impact on PA education.”

Board nominations are still open through July 7. Whether you’re considering the role of President Elect or Director at Large, this is more than a leadership position—it’s a chance to shape the future of the profession and the students we serve.
