PAEA Board Q1 Update: Meeting Member Needs Now and Next

The PAEA Board of Directors met for its first quarter meeting focused on helping programs navigate immediate challenges while preparing for what’s next in PA education.

Governance Focused on Member Priorities

At the first quarter meeting, the Board focused on its core responsibility: staying responsive to member needs. The Board continued to refine how it works together and sets priorities and completed additional training in values-driven stewardship and leadership.

This work keeps the Board aligned with PAEA’s values and focused on sound, member-centered decision-making so programs receive clear direction and leaders are prepared to act when issues affect students, faculty, and operations.

Advocacy in Action: Defending Federal Student Loan Access for PA Students

That preparation proved essential this quarter. As part of its advocacy focus, the Board received an update on the national policy landscape, including threats to federal student loan access for PA students.

During the meeting, the U.S. Department of Education released a proposed rule that would significantly restrict PA student access to federal loans, directly affecting program enrollment and student access. In response, the Association immediately launched a national advocacy campaign to inform federal decision-makers about the real-world impact these proposed limits would have on PA students and programs.

PAEA is coordinating a profession-wide response to the Department of Education’s proposed federal loan limits. We are calling on members to submit public comments to the Federal Register explaining the real impact on PA students and programs.

PAEA’s Grassroots Action Network makes this easy, with background on the issue and a ready-to-use comment that members can personalize and submit directly. Submit a comment.

Stronger Board Structures for What’s Ahead

This rapid response was possible because the Board has prioritized work to create more efficient, cohesive ways of working that align with national association governance standards and reflect how high-performing, peer boards operate. Clearer structures, defined roles, and stronger coordination help the Board focus on what matters most to members and stay responsive as the environment changes.

In the first quarter, that work included an ongoing review of committee roles and responsibilities. The goal is to keep the Association efficient and ready to support programs on immediate needs – such as navigating policy changes and accreditation – and longer-term issues, including the entry-level degree.

Positioning PAEA for What’s Next

The Board’s continued focus on effective governance positions the Association to support programs in practical, timely ways, stay aligned with member needs, and maintain momentum to move the profession forward.
