Summary of Major Responsibilities

The MGH Institute of Health Professions (Institute) seeks an experienced, full-time faculty member to serve within its School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences and Department of PA Studies. The appointment is available at all ranks, based on the candidate's education, experience, and record of accomplishment. Opportunities may exist for an academic leadership role within the PA program, if desired.

The Institute is part of Massachusetts General Hospital and is the only degree-granting affiliate of Mass General Brigham. The Institute also includes the School of Nursing, with numerous opportunities supporting interprofessional education and practice.

The Mass General Brigham health system includes Harvard teaching hospitals and is the largest hospital-funded research enterprise in the United States, with over $2 billion in annual research activities. The system employs more than 80,000 people across academic medical centers, specialty and community hospitals, clinics, diagnostic centers, and related facilities. It provides world-class clinical training and career opportunities for PA program trainees and graduates.

The faculty member should have experience in PA education, curriculum design and evaluation, and scholarly activity. Primary responsibilities include:

  • Teaching
  • Student advisement
  • Institutional and professional service
  • Scholarship

Faculty responsibilities include:

  • Defining and updating the program's mission, goals, learning outcomes, and competencies
  • Participating in admissions and applicant selection
  • Providing instruction and mentorship
  • Conducting student assessments and evaluations
  • Modeling professionalism, integrity, critical thinking, collaboration, inclusion, and empathy
  • Providing academic counseling and remedial instruction
  • Developing, implementing, coordinating, and evaluating curriculum and program effectiveness
  • Peer mentorship

The proposed start date is June 1, 2026, though earlier or later dates may be considered.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

The faculty member will collaborate with the Department Chair and Program Director annually to develop a work plan covering teaching, scholarship, and service, with the option of academic administrative responsibilities if desired.

Teaching (approximately 50 to 60%)

  • Teaching and course direction in entry-level and post-professional programs based on expertise and program needs

Service (approximately 20%)

  • Student advisement
  • Participation in department, school, Institute, and health system committees
  • Involvement in professional organizations at regional, national, or international levels

Scholarship or Research (approximately 20 to 30%)

  • Scholarship in teaching and learning, integration, application, or discovery
  • Research activities in area of expertise

Administrative Service

  • Roles in preclinical education, clinical education, or admissions may reduce teaching effort

Clinical Practice

  • May be performed up to 20% FTE
  • If conducted outside faculty time per Institute policy, this represents additional income

Education and Experience Qualifications

  • Earned terminal academic degree appropriate to the discipline (e.g., master's degree for PA)
  • Minimum 2 years of PA or medical education experience (5 years preferred)
  • Licensed or license-eligible in Massachusetts
  • If a PA: current NCCPA certification
  • If a physician: current board certification
  • Minimum 4 years of clinical practice experience
  • Established record of service and scholarship in the health professions

A doctorate relevant to higher education or healthcare (PhD, EdD, DrPH, DHSc, etc.) is preferred but not required.

Licensees must be in good standing and maintain licensure and certification throughout employment.

Skills, Abilities, and Competencies Required

  • Knowledge and experience in PA or medical education
  • Understanding of the PA profession and current practice
  • Demonstrated effectiveness as a teacher and advisor
  • Record of service to the discipline or higher education
  • Proficiency in educational technologies used in graduate health professions education
  • Excellent interpersonal and interprofessional collaboration skills
  • Ability to interact ethically and professionally with students, faculty, staff, and administrators
  • Ability to produce and disseminate scholarly work
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion

Supervisory Responsibility

None anticipated. As a course director, the faculty member may supervise guest lecturers, term lecturers, teaching assistants, graduate students, or graduate assistants.

Fiscal/Budget Responsibility

None.

Working Conditions

The faculty member will serve as an active and contributing member of the Department. The role requires:

  • Flexibility with scheduling
  • Strong organizational and self-monitoring skills
  • Ability to manage multiple projects
  • Collaboration within interprofessional teams

The PA program is an on-site, in-person training program. Faculty are expected to be regularly present on campus in Boston, MA (Charlestown Navy Yard) and maintain office hours.

Training

No additional training anticipated. The Institute uses the D2L (Desire2Learn) Brightspace learning management system. Training is available for faculty who are not familiar with the platform.
