East Carolina University is inviting applicants for a combined Principal Faculty - Medical Director faculty position. The Principal Faculty-Medical Director is a member of the Department of Physician Assistant Studies faculty (rank commensurate with experience). This position is 1.0 FTE that is divided between 0.8 FTE as Principal Faculty and 0.2 FTE as Medical Director. The Medical Director supports the Program Director in ensuring that didactic instruction and/or supervised clinical practice experiences (SCPEs) meet current practice standards as they relate to the physician assistant (PA) role in providing patient care. The Medical Director is responsible for being actively involved in developing the mission statement for the program; providing teaching and instruction; evaluating student performance; designing, implementing, coordinating, and evaluating curriculum; and evaluating the program to ensure adherence to ARC-PA accreditation standards. The Medical Director is instrumental in assisting the program to ensure that students consistently meet the program’s Student Learning Outcomes to achieve competencies required for PA practice.

The Medical Director also participates in activities that promote the stature of the department throughout the institution.

KEY JOB ELEMENTS: Medical Director Role

• Provides continuous, competent, and evidenced based medical guidance for the clinically related program components so that both didactic and supervised practicum instruction meet current acceptable standards.

• Assists the program faculty with ongoing review of all Physician Assistant Program curriculum phases and continuous self‐study.

• Serves as an advocate for the program within the ECU Health and community systems to promote the PA profession and encourage increased utilization of PAs within the healthcare community.

• Assists in clinical site development and clinical site monitoring as needed by the Clinical Education Team.

• Participates in accreditation activities, as well as ongoing program evaluation, including review of the program’s mission, vision, program goals, competencies, and outcomes.

• Ensures annual review and achievement of the program’s learning outcomes and competencies.

• Assists with ongoing curriculum development (design and implementation), curriculum evaluation, and improvement.

KEY JOB ELEMENTS: Principal Faculty

• Provides teaching and instruction within the PA program using a variety of teaching methods, including lecture, case-based learning, simulation, and lab sessions in areas of clinical and/or professional expertise as per workload guidelines.

• Evaluates student performance in assessment activities such as written clinical documentation, evidence-based medicine projects, objective structured clinical examinations (OSCEs), and clinical and technical skills sessions/lab practical exams during all phases of the program.

• Assists in curriculum development.

• Assists the Directors of Didactic/Clinical Education in administrative coordination of these phases if needed.

• Attends Student Progress Committee meetings, program retreats, new student orientation, white coat ceremonies, and further faculty/student community events as requested by the Program Director.

• Assists in the recruitment (i.e., Search Committee member) and evaluation of clinical preceptors with the Program Director.

• Participates in regular faculty meetings and Curriculum Committee meetings.

• Represents the PA department and programs at the University and other organizational, academic, and social functions.

• Participates in faculty development opportunities each year as required in the areas of teaching, service, and academic administration.

• Provide remedial student instruction as needed.

• Assists with other responsibilities as determined by the Program Director/Chair.

Requirements:

• A licensed physician assistant, or current or previously licensed physician, and maintain current required continuing medical education.

• Completion of an ARC-PA-accredited program or its successors or predecessors, or completion of an LCME-accredited medical school.

• Must have seven to ten years of clinical experience.
