Planning in a Complex World — Key to Leading Effectively
Approximately 40 volunteer leaders and staff gathered at PAEA’s offices in Washington, DC, last week to brainstorm about the future of the Association. This second annual Leadership Summit was an opportunity for Board members, council chairs, and staff advisors to come together for two days to discuss emergent issues and prepare for coming trends — in health care, education, and technology, as well as the broader world of economics and society.

Guided by long-time PAEA consultant Josh Mintz, MS, and a kickoff presentation by AAMC’s Senior Director of Member Organizational Development Kevin Grigsby, DSW, the group explored, through impromptu surveys and small-group activities, how to lead strategically in a time of constant change. The concept of organizational change, as it relates to creating PAEA’s future, was discussed — where are we now and where do we want to go? The group also explored how volunteers, along with their councils and committees, can work together more effectively.

After a long, productive first day, summit attendees were treated to a rooftop concert featuring the musical talents of “the two Kevins” — Board member Kevin Schuer, DrPH, PA-C, and Leadership, Development and Recruitment Council Chair Kevin Lohenry, PhD, PA-C. Although they come from different parts of the country, the Kevins sounded as if they’d been playing together for years. They clearly won over the crowd with their lively and impressive performance.
The wealth of innovative ideas and recommendations that came out of the Leadership Summit will help form the basis for the strategic planning process that the Board of Directors will continue at their next meeting in July.
