Turning the Page
A new edition of one of the standard books on the PA profession was recently released by three well-known PA educators and researchers. The authors of the 4th edition of Physician Assistants: Policy and Practice are:
- Roderick S. Hooker, PhD, PA, a noted PA scholar and health services researcher
- James Cawley, MPH, PA-C, a professor of prevention and community health in the Milken Institute School of Public Health and professor of Physician Assistant Studies in the School of Medicine and Health Sciences at The George Washington University
- Christine Everett, PhD, MPH, PA-C, assistant professor of family and community medicine at Duke University
The authors have drawn on extensive research to trace the evolution of PA roles and responsibilities in the delivery of health care services. Their presentation of historical content is balanced with discussions of the ethical, educational, legislative, and economic forces that are shaping the profession in the US health workforce.

A Generous Grant Award Gives JMU PA Students a Leg Up
The James Madison University (JMU) PA program and the Harrisonburg-Rockingham Free Clinic have been awarded a major training grant that will provide the PA students with a hands-on experience in a clinical setting well before their clinical rotations begin. The $886,827 Primary Care and Training Enhancement Grant is awarded by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) during a competitive process.
Under the terms of the grant, the funds will be distributed over five years and allow each JMU PA student the opportunity to visit the clinic to work and learn 10 days during the year while completing their schooling. The funds will be used to pay preceptors for their time and also to purchase equipment for the clinic, such as a new EKG machine.
