AAAP CME Opportunities for PA Faculty
The American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry (AAAP) is the national professional organization representing health care professionals who provide care to the millions of patients suffering from substance use disorders. AAAP is also the lead agency for the Opioid Response Network (ORN) grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) that supports PAEA’s Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) Waiver Training Initiative.
AAAP is jointly accredited to provide continuing education for the health care team. AAAP offers a number of CME opportunities for PAs who have an interest in, or are practicing in the area of, the evaluation and management of substance use disorders. PAEA encourages any members interested in behavioral/mental health CME opportunities to explore the following events:
AAAP 30th Annual Meeting and Scientific Symposium 2019
Date: December 5–8, 2019
Location: San Diego, CA
CME Credit Information: Up to 29.25 AAPA Category 1 CME credits
Event Description: The Annual Meeting and Scientific Symposium is designed to present the latest findings from basic and clinical research as well as policy-related information on addictions to a broad array of health care professionals; this is achieved through various forums for dissemination, including symposia, posters, workshops, and case conferences. The meeting also provides the organizational backdrop for the exchange of ideas, discussion, and working groups focused on other AAAP educational and policy-based activities.
AAAP’s Addictions and Their Treatment

Event Description: Recent reports indicate that the average primary care provider has more than 2,000 patients, and as many as 200 of them could have a substance use disorder. This course provides health providers a comprehensive review of current research and clinical applications to educate participants in evidence-based approaches in their clinical practices.
Practical Guide to Offering Office-Based Opioid Treatment
Date: December 4, 2019

CME Credit Information: 4.5 AAPA Category 1 CME credits
Event Description: This interactive course is designed for physicians, PAs, nurse practitioners, pharmacists, nurses, social workers, psychologists, and health care professionals who are involved in a MAT practice and want to expand their expertise and comfort level in caring for patients with opioid use disorder. This course will be approached as an engaging case-based workshop with breakout groups and opportunities for peer-to-peer discussions.
Advanced Addiction Psychopharmacology Course
Dates/Times: December 4–5, 2019
Location: San Diego, CA
CME Credit Information: Up to 12.0 AAPA Category 1 CME credits
Event Description: This intensive two-day course is designed for physicians, PAs, and nurse practitioners who have a foundation in prescribing medication for patients with substance use disorders, but who would like a deeper understanding of these pharmacologies. The course will be approached as a didactic lecture with equal time for peer discussion and questions and answers.
43rd Annual AMERSA Conference
Date: November 7–9, 2019
Location: Boston, MA
CME Credit Information: Up to 15.25 AAPA Category 1 CME credits
Event Description: This conference, hosted by the Association for Multidisciplinary Education and Research in Substance use and Addiction (AMERSA) in partnership with the AAAP, provides an opportunity for PAs to hone their clinical and educational skills in the identification and management of substance use disorders through interprofessional collaboration and plenary sessions focused on substance use education, research, clinical care, and policy.
