The College of Health Professions is one of six colleges at South Carolina's only academic health center and is among the largest colleges by student enrollment at MUSC. This Principal Faculty role in the MUSC Physician Assistant (PA) Program is a full-time position focused on:
- Teaching
- Curriculum development
- Student mentorship
- Scholarly activities
The faculty member will deliver didactic and clinical education, contribute to accreditation processes, and engage in interprofessional collaboration. The position includes opportunities for clinical practice and requires participation in program events, admissions activities, and university committees.
Faculty members are expected to:
- Foster strong relationships with students
- Ensure high-quality educational experiences
- Contribute to continuous improvement of the PAS program
This is a non-tenure track position. Academic rank and salary will be commensurate with credentials and experience.

Minimum Qualifications
- Master's degree in Physician Assistant Studies or a related field
- Current NCCPA certification (if a PA) or appropriate licensure/certification in a relevant healthcare profession
- Eligibility for professional licensure in South Carolina
- At least three years of clinical experience in a relevant healthcare field
- Excellent communication, organizational, self-motivation, and leadership skills
Highly competitive candidates will have:
- Doctoral degree (PhD, EdD, DHSc, or equivalent) in education, leadership, or a clinical field
- Previous experience in PA education, including clinical precepting, teaching, administration, or leadership
- Record of scholarly contributions (publications, presentations) in PA education or clinical practice
- Experience with ARC-PA accreditation, site visits, or program self-studies
Work Environment
- On-site at MUSC's Charleston campus
- Occasional evenings or weekends for admissions events, faculty meetings, or student activities
- Collaborative environment with faculty, staff, and healthcare professionals across the university
The full-time faculty member reports to the PAS Program Director. Performance evaluations are conducted by the Program Director with input from the Chair and Dean.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
All program faculty share responsibility for:
- Developing, reviewing, and revising the program's mission, goals, and competencies
- Selecting applicants for admission
- Providing student instruction
- Evaluating student performance
- Academic counseling
- Ensuring availability of remedial instruction
- Designing, implementing, coordinating, and evaluating the curriculum
- Evaluating overall program effectiveness
Additional responsibilities include:
- Contributing to implementation and evaluation of summative assessments
- Engaging in professional service at the local, state, or national level
- Participating in scholarly activities (research, publications, presentations)
- Serving on program, college, and university committees
- Participating in graduation and white coat ceremonies
- Contributing to self-study and accreditation processes
- Engaging in professional development
- Clinical practice release time up to 0.2 FTE
