Principal Faculty-Clinical Skills and Simulation Learning (Assistant Professor)

The Oregon Health & Science University Division of Physician Assistant (PA) Education is recruiting a Principal Faculty for Clinical Skills and Simulation Learning to be responsible for oversight of clinical skills and simulation activity across the academic and clinical phases of the curriculum and in addition, to lead and teach clinical skills within the clinical phase of the program, using best practices and evidence-based research in curricular development. This individual will work closely with the Program Director and faculty as needed to develop, implement, and evaluate clinical skills and simulated patient experience instruction, ensuring that students receive a comprehensive education that prepares them for the clinical setting and for the Physician Assistant National Certifying Exam (PANCE).

This position reports to (supervisor): Division Head and Program Director, Physician Assistant Education.

Function/Duties of Position

In support of the PA program's Clinical Skills and Simulation Learning activities:

Responsibilities:

• Collaborate with the OHSU Simulation center to direct the overall administration, programming, and implementation of clinical skills and simulation activities (e.g. OSCE, procedural, standardized patients, task trainers, high and low fidelity simulators, etc.) within the program.
• Engage in simulation specific briefings, debriefings, needs assessments, and trainings.
• Provide instruction and remedial intervention to students in the development of clinical and physical examination skills, including serving as course director for the Advanced Clinical Skills Courses
• Develop innovative assessments to evaluate student’s competency attainment of clinical and technical skills during the clinical phase of the program.
• Participate in clinical year site visits to assess student acquisition of clinical and technical skills.
• Provide mentorship and support to students during their clinical skills and simulation learning experiences across both phases of the program.
• Work in collaboration with the Director of Research and Assessment to evaluate student performance in relevant competency areas and correlation with predicted performance on the Physician Assistant National Certifying Examination (PANCE).
• Develop expertise in curricular development of clinical skills and simulation activities in alignment with best practice and the most up-to-date techniques.
• Serve as a resource to program faculty for the design and implementation of simulation and clinical skills learning experiences, promoting evidence-based, multimodal, effective instruction.
• Develop and implement processes and procedures for simulation and clinical skills activities.
• Represent the program at School and University groups and committees that are involved with simulation, electronic health records, and standardized patients.

As a member of the faculty of the PA Program:

• Contribute to student instruction as course director and/or instructor, consistent with areas of expertise as assigned by the Program Director
• Review and revise as necessary the mission statement, goals, and competencies for the program.
• Provide student instruction in the academic and clinical phases of the program. 
• Evaluate student performance and assure the availability of remedial instruction.
• Develop, implement, coordinate, and evaluate curriculum.
• Evaluate the program by participating in the program’s ongoing self-assessment, analysis, and accreditation processes.
• Provide academic advising support to students throughout the educational program.
• Participate in the selection of applicants for admission to the PA program.
• Participate on program committees as assigned by the Program Director, such as the Progress and Promotion Committee, Admissions Selection Committee, Policy Committee, Curriculum Committee and other ad-hoc committees as necessary.
• Participate in state and national PA organizations as necessary to promote the program and the profession.
• Represent the PA program through service on committees at the University level as required.
• Pursue faculty development in activities outside of the program such as clinical practice or scholarly activities agreed upon by the Program Director and the individual.
• Perform other duties as determined by the Program Director from time to time.
• Of note, faculty must not participate as a health care provider for students in the program, except in an emergency situation.
• Clinical practice up to 20% of effort if applicable

Required Qualifications

• PA/MD/DO from an accredited academic institution.
• At least 3 years of clinical practice.
• At least 3 years of prior teaching experience in higher education preferred.
• Strong organizational skills.
• Experience with clinical and procedural skills and simulation strongly preferred.
• If a PA, current NCCPA certification.
• If a PA, Eligibility for licensure in the state of Oregon.

About the OHSU PA Program

The OHSU PA Program was established in 1995 with the mission of preparing physician assistants to provide primary care services to medically underserved communities. The Program graduated its first class in September, 1997. In the spring of 2001, the PA Program became a free-standing Division within the School of Medicine.

The OHSU PA Program is a 26-month, full-time course of study leading to a Master of Physician Assistant Studies degree. A class of 42 students is accepted each year with classes starting in June. The didactic phase of the Program is 12 months; the clinical phase lasts 14 months.
