Below we outline what is possible in the PAEA Assessment Center. Each program must evaluate the options presented below and make the best choice for your circumstances. Regardless of which option you choose, the most essential piece is to provide clear instructions to students, so they know the program’s expectations and requirements, as well as policies in place to enforce those requirements.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to PAEA through office hours or email at exams@PAEAonline.org.
Exam Delivery Methods
In-Person Proctored Exams
This exam is taken on campus or in a testing center with a live proctor. This delivery method can also be used for video conference proctoring when the students connect to their proctor with a second device (e.g. phone or tablet) .
-
In-person faculty or staff are needed to initiate the exam and actively proctor in the testing space
-
Secure Browser is required
-
Required for End of Curriculum exam
-
Ability to use Video Conference tools for proctoring, as the Secure Browser secures the exam for students being monitored on a separate device (this option is only available for Packrat and End of Rotation exams)
-
Must designate a specific time for students to start the exam, but can be started early on exam day if the Proctor is ready to admit them to the exam
-
Direct support if students encounter issues during the exam
-
Must have faculty or staff available to start exams and monitor behavior
-
A proctoring session, set up the day of the exam in the Proctoring tab, is required, and you must be able to give students their Session Code
Unproctored Exams
This exam is taken remotely and without a live proctor present.
- SecureClient lockdown browser is required
- Flexibility for students to be able to take exams away from campus
- No in-person proctor needed to initiate the exam (i.e., no Proctor Session)
- Programs can still require a start time and location for students to take exams per program policies and procedures
-
Students can start at any time within the scheduled date range, even if they are not in the program’s required environment – cannot be started early, and cannot be started or relaunched after the exam window has closed
-
Students are emailed everything they need to start the exam on their own
-
Programs cannot pause the exam or monitor progress beyond “In Progress” and “Completed” status in the Scheduling screen
Remote Proctored
This exam is taken off campus with a third-party remote proctoring service, or proctored by faculty or staff using video conferencing with screen sharing to monitor exams (Zoom, Teams).
-
Third-party monitoring service using their screen share and lockdown tools is most ideal
-
Secure Browser is not permitted
-
Registration Code must be downloaded from the Scheduling screen and provided to the proctoring service in advance.
For remote proctoring by faculty, programs can decide between two options for connecting with the student to monitor behavior:
- Option 1: Use a second device (phone or iPad) to the side of their work station to monitor their environment, including a view of their screen — scheduling the In-Person delivery type with Secure Browser is recommended and described above.
- Option 2: If students do not have a second device, they can use their web camera and screen sharing feature with the proctor — Secure Browser cannot be used and programs will need to schedule the Remote Proctored delivery type.
-
Good option for close monitoring of students who are unable to come back to campus for exams
-
Flexible scheduling – students can schedule the exam event with a third––party proctoring service at a time that is convenient for then within the scheduled date range – cannot be started early, and cannot be started or relaunched after the exam window has closed
-
Additional cost to programs for third-party monitoring
-
Less direct support for the student than with live, in-person proctoring – cannot pause the exam or monitor progress beyond “In Progress” and “Completed” status in the Scheduling screen
-
Must be scheduled with enough notice to provide the registration code and testing website to the proctor/proctoring service – students are not provided the registration code or testing website in their scheduling confirmation emails
Common Questions
There are three acceptable options in this case:
- Option 1: The exam can be scheduled as ‘Unproctored’ and the student will be required to use Secure Browser without proctor intervention. (this option is not available for the End-of-Curriculum exam)
- Option 2: The exam can be scheduled as ‘In Person’ and the student will be required to use Secure Browser with a faculty/staff monitor via Zoom, Teams, or another web-based video platform on a second device
- Option 3: The exam can be scheduled as ‘Remote Proctored’ and you can use a third-party remote proctoring service or faculty/staff can monitor the student via Zoom, Teams, or another web-based video platform utilizing screen sharing and webcam on the testing device
PAEA recommends that students take their exams using In-Person Proctored events at a designated testing center on or off campus:
-
Have your Program Director or Account Manager create an Assessment Only account for testing center staff with Proctor user permissions so that they can manage the proctoring session once their environment is secure. This Proctoring Session can be set up for them, if needed.
-
PAEA recommends for a student to store their belongings and phones outside if using a private room, and utilize cameras or two-way mirrors to monitor behavior, if possible.
Ultimately, arrangements should be made so the exam delivery complies with program and university policy—both for timing and for consistent exam delivery practices. The system allows for anyone with Proctoring privileges to step in at the last minute. You can also start a session late should someone not be immediately available.
When a proctor is truly unavailable, exams can be rescheduled as “Unproctored” until right before the scheduled start time. In this case, students can start exams without proctor intervention and Secure Browser will be required for test administration. The required location of the exam (in-person in a classroom vs. remote) should comply with program requirements and policies.
The best way to ensure exam security is to schedule the exam In-Person, and administer with a live proctor present. If students are far from campus, programs have the option of using the Remote Proctored or Unproctored types, as both will securely deliver the exams through different means.
The most appropriate option depends on what your greatest concern is. If you are concerned with students starting exams outside the required secure environment, In-Person delivery type is your best option as they won’t be able to start until the proctor has authorized them to begin.
If your concern is with the student looking up things on their computer during an exam and the environment is less of an issue, Unproctored delivery type may be preferred as Secure Browser is required, though they can start exams at a time convenient to them without monitoring for outside resources or second devices.
Remote proctored exams are not secured, but they are designed to be used with a third-party remote proctoring service with technical resources to monitor the device and the student’s environment. Students cannot begin the exam without a registration code provided by the proctor.
In any case, a strong academic integrity policy is your best defense against inappropriate exam behavior. Ensuring students have clear expectations for conduct in exams and that there are consequences for violating those requirements goes a long way to deterring dishonest behavior.
