Faculty Development

Faculty development is one of the most important services PAEA offers. The Association's faculty development efforts are overseen by the Faculty Development Institute (FDI). Becoming a faculty member is not just a decision to teach or challenge students intellectually. As PA educators, we play an integral role in the professional development of future physician assistants.

Although expectations for faculty vary from institution to institution, academic appointment often brings requirements for student advisement, classroom/laboratory instruction, design and implementation of original research projects, grant writing, professional development, and university and community service.

Promotion and tenure are the primary means by which colleges and universities encourage and reward academic achievements and maintain faculty excellence. Promotion has traditionally been regarded as a reward for significant faculty achievements in the areas of teaching, scholarship, and service. Tenure demonstrates a commitment to the faculty member for continued productivity and excellence in these areas. Success in these areas not only offers evidence for promotion and/or tenure within the institution, but provides personal satisfaction through professional achievement. Because institutions vary in their requirements and procedures for promotion and tenure, faculty should check with their own institutions for specific information.

The FDI develops and provides resources to assist physician assistant faculty in being successful in the three crucial areas of teaching, scholarship, and service. These resources include a variety of workshops throughout the year.

The American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA) has developed a PA Development Toolbox that promotes PA personal and professional development. This resource contains a plethora of excellent "tools" for practicing clinical or educational PAs.
